Toyota Snags World’s Largest Automaker Title for Fourth Consecutive Year

Toyota has captured the title of world’s largest automaker for the fourth year in a row.

The Japanese automaker is the only brand to move over 10 million units in 2015, selling a total on 10.15 million vehicles last year. That is actually a drop of 0.8 percent compared to Toyota’s 2014 sales.

Volkswagen sits in second place, reporting a 2 percent drop to 9.9 million vehicles moved in 2015 while General Motors still ranks in the third position reporting a 0.2 percent rise to 9.8 million vehicles sold in 2015.

VW actually held the sales lead through the first six months of 2015, but its current massive diesel scandal caused a sharp drop in sales in the second half of the year. It was always ex-VW CEO Martin Winterkorn’s goal to surpass Toyota in global sales, but after stepping down in the wake of the scandal, it’s likely that Volkswagen will not rethink its priorities.

Toyota has already made moves to secure its fifth year as the top automaker, introducing a new version of its popular Prius hybrid. The Japanese brand is also considering buying out the other 49 percent of the Daihatsu unit, giving Toyota full control of the leading builder of small cars for Indonesia and Malaysia.
